A brief history of the area

In the early 1840s, J.J. (Hans) Potgieter, a Voortrekker, started a farm on the route between Durban and Pietermaritzburg. Captivated by this lush valley, he named it Assagay Kraal. An assagay, more commonly spelt as "assegai" or "assagai", is a spear or javelin used historically by the amaZulu. The area is now known as Assagay but the startling beauty still remains.

King Shaka International Airport is 59,2 km away from Assagay. Your trip will take you about 43 minutes via the N3 and N2. Pietermaritzburg Airport is a closer 45,6 km (33 minutes) away via the N3.

For a sitdown meal, Bona Terra Cafe, Gofresh Café and Juice Bar, and Lucky Bean offer plenty of tasty dishes.
