Waterfall at a glance

Waterfall is a suburb of Hillcrest. The sought-after residential area is popular for its picturesque views and tranquil lifestyle. 

The area has an abundance of trees which attracts a vast birdlife. Waterfall is situated near the Krantzkloof Nature Reserve which gives it the feel of country living. 

Residents can enjoy the calmness of the area while also taking advantage of being close to amenities such as top schools, hospitals, and shopping malls. Property in Waterfall comprises of fairly large houses, gated estates, vacant land, and commercial units. 

A brief history of the area

In 1851, a farm of over 6000 acres was granted to Gerrit P. Kemp. He named the farm Langefontein. The farm had several subdivisions. Today, Waterfall lies on the last portion which was known as Upper Langefontein. 

By 1900 the area had two stores: one run by Ada Christian and the other owned by Essop Bobat. 

Most of the land was farmed by the Dinkelman family. They were responsible for getting electricity laid in the neighbourhood. The first butchery was started by Vivian Dinkelman.

In 1959, George Rowles acquired a portion of the Waterfall Farm. In 1967, he sold his dairy herd and began to develop Waterfall as a residential area with a shopping complex. The first flats built in Waterfall were above the shopping complex which was completed in 1986.

Climate

If you live in Waterfall, you can expect to experience warm summers and temperate winters. The hottest months of the year are December to March, and during these months, you should expect minimum temperatures in the high teens or low 20s, and maximum temperatures in the high 20s or low 30s. Winter frequently sees the mercury drop below 10°C in the evenings and early mornings, before warming up to the high teens or low 20s by midday.

Schools in the area

Waterfall has great education facilities available for scholars. Schools such as Waterfall College, Curro Hillcrest, Forest View Primary School, and Waterfall Pre-Primary School are preferred choices for both parents and scholars in the area.

Healthcare in the area

The Busamed Hillcrest Private Hospital is a 16-minute drive from Waterfall. The hospital is serviced by professional doctors and specialists such as neurologists, anesthesiologists, gynaecologists, cardiologists, and more. 

The Highway Sub-acute and Rehabilitation Hospital is also located nearby.

Shopping centres

Watercrest Mall is a convenient six-minute drive from Waterfall. The mall has over 130 stores and eateries such as Clicks, Toys R Us, Mr Price, Woolworths, SPAR, Checkers, Game, and Dis-Chem. It even has a range of Ster-Kinekor cinemas to keep residents entertained with the latest offerings from Hollywood. 

Furthermore, the Kloof Village Mall, Link Hills Shopping Centre, Christians Village Shopping Centre, along with Gillitts Shopping Centre are other nearby shopping facilities that residents get their goods and services from. 

Distance from key points (Airport/CBD)

The King Shaka International Airport is 58 km away from Waterfall. This journey will take a 47-minute drive via the N2.

Restaurants

Many of the popular fast-food franchises can be found at the Watercrest Mall, such as Spur, John Dory's, and Mugg & Bean. The Kitchen @ Cotswold, Mozambik, Lupa Osteria, Butlers Restaurant, Stokers Arms, and Tommy's Sushi Kloof are great places to eat at near Waterfall. 

Special attractions

Waterfall is a spectacular place for both the young and old. Aside from the great activities at the malls and restaurants, residents can visit Wet Rock Adventures and the Waterfall Equestrian Centre.

1. Wet Rock Adventures

Wet Rock Adventures is a favourite for residents and out-of-towners in Waterfall. Visitors can enjoy an action-packed trip down the kid and adult-friendly slides, a splash around in the lazy river, and even grab a scrumptious bite to eat at Wet Rock Café. This indoor heated water park is open all year round.

2. Waterfall Equestrian Centre

The Waterfall Equestrian Centre overlooks the hills of Waterfall. The venue offers both children and adults casual and competitive horse riding lessons while taking in majestic views. There are also trail rides and pony camps to be enjoyed. 

Established in 2017, the equestrian centre was inspired by Louise Ann Mitchell. She has completed her Horse Mastership Course and was a long-standing instructor at New Market Stables. Louise was also the KZN Special Olympics Coach for two years running.
