A brief history of the area

The land upon which Kloof has been developed was once part of a farm called Richmond. The suburb was originally named "Krantzkloof", but the name was later changed to "Kloof" at the request of the General Manager of the South African railways, due to confusion between "Krantzkloof" and "Kranskop".

Climate

Kloof enjoys a lovely cool climate, in which the temperature on a typical summer's day rises into the mid or high 20s. Summer evenings remain cool, with temperatures typically in the high teens. The coldest months of the year, between June and August, remain temperate, with the mercury rising into the low 20s and dropping to just below the 10°C mark during a typical evening.

Schools in the area

Kloof is home to a number of outstanding public and private schools. Children can start their journey to greatness at Kloof Junior Primary School and Kloof Senior Primary School, before completing their schooling at Kloof High School. Private schools in the area, which cater for learners in all grades, include Thomas More College and St Mary's Diocesan School for Girls.

Healthcare in the area

A number of general practitioners can be found in Kloof, as well as an array of other medical professionals including dentists, optometrists and physiotherapists, among others. Women living in Kloof are privileged to have Femina Health, which is described as "the A to Z in Women's Health" close at hand. Busamed Hillcrest Private Hospital is also close to home for residents of Kloof.

Shopping centres

Residents of Kloof are spoilt for choice when it comes to deciding where to do their shopping. Fields Hill Shopping Centre, Delcairn Lifestyle Centre and Kloof Village Mall all offer a wide variety of tenants and a fantastic shopping experience.

Distance from key points (Airport/CBD)

The driving distance from Kloof to King Shaka International Airport is approximately 34km. In average traffic, it will take you about 40 minutes to get there. Durban's CBD is roughly 25km or 25 minutes away.

There is no shortage of restaurants to tantalise the taste buds in Kloof. Stokers Arms  is a Kloof institution overlooking the railway tracks, complete with a social ambience, a wide range of drinks and delectable meals. Bellevue Café is another much-loved Kloof eatery, which offers a diverse menu as well as wines and craft beverages. 1904 Bistro Américain offers a modern interpretation of the American diner experience, with a variety of comfort food.
