Everton at a glance

A brief history of the area

Everton lies on a section of what was once known as Richmond Farm No 999. It was owned by William Swan Field and then his brother John Coote Field, or "Old Jack" as he was affectionately known. The area covered by the Richmond farm included all of the current day Kloof, part of Forest Hills, part of Wyebank, Padfield Park, Surprise Farm, and Motala Farm. 

In 1896, John Coote Field died and left the farm to his wife, Elizabeth Catrina Field, and children. She died in 1901, and the twelve subdivisions were in due course transferred to the beneficiaries. Most of the sons each inherited 561 acres and the daughters 400 acres. By 1903 the village of Krantz Kloof was born.

Climate

The weather in Everton tends to be ever-pleasant, with warm summer days upon which the temperature rises into the high 20s or low 30s, before cooling down considerably at night. Winter often sees evenings in Everton drop below 10°C, with days warming up to temperatures in the high teens or low 20s.

Residents in Everton have the privilege to send their children to St Mary's Diocesan School for Girls, Kloof Junior Primary School, Kloof Pre-Primary, Kloof High School, Thomas More College, as well as the internationally acclaimed Roseway Waldorf School, situated just 15 minutes away.

Residents are not short of medical facilities in Everton. The closest hospitals are Busamed Hillcrest Private Hospital and Hillcrest Hospital. Highway Sub-acute and Rehabilitation Hospital, Medicross Hillcrest, and Healing Hills Hospital are other notable institutions that residents can visit in times of need.

Shopping centres

Watercrest Mall offers residents in Everton a superb shopping experience and can be easily accessed by driving through the Everton Gorge, past Le Domaine, Clifton Hill, and 101 Acutt Estate. The mall has over 130 stores and eateries such as Woolworths, Spar, Checkers, Game, and Dischem. 

The Kloof Village Mall, Delcairn Lifestyle Centre, Fields Hill Shopping Centre, Link Hills Shopping Centre, along with the Hillcrest Corner Shopping Mall, are other great shopping facilities available for residents. 

Distance from key points (Airport/CBD)

The King Shaka International Airport is 55 km away from Everton. This journey will take a 45-minute drive via the N2.

Residents in Everton get to enjoy some of the poshest restaurants in the Upper Highway area. Ray's Kitchen, Sprigs, Bellevue Café, Oscars Café, Lupa Osteria, Butlers Restaurant, Gate of India, Union Square, Pinto's, and Mozambique are a must-visit in the area.

The Kloof Country Club, Krantzkloof Nature Reserve, and the Acutt Drive Trail are great attractions around Everton. 

1. The Kloof Country Club

The Kloof Country Club is an established golfing landmark. It is also a networking and social hub of the Upper Highway Area. Young professionals, families, retired locals, and holidaymakers enjoy facilities such as a bar, big screen TV, boardroom and driving range. The club also has a restaurant, squash courts, swimming pool, as well as tennis courts. Even bird watchers get to enjoy spotting the rare birds that linger around the area. 

2. Krantzkloof Nature Reserve

The Krantzkloof Nature Reserve is a great attraction for those who love the outdoors. It was established by the Natal Parks Board in 1950. The reserve is known for its abundance of flora and fauna, including 50 mammal, 253 bird, 35 reptile, 150 butterfly, 273 tree, and over 1500 plant species. 

Most of the Krantzkloof Nature Reserve's 532 hectares is covered by dense forest and vegetation. Visitors are met with spectacular views across the well-forested gorge cut by the Molweni River. On the Molweni River is the Everton Waterfall. An added attraction is the well-developed picnic area adjacent to the dam at the head of Kloof Falls

3. Acutt Drive Trail

The Acutt Drive Trail leads to the phenomenal Everton Waterfall. The interesting walk in a lush riverine forest environment is fun for the whole family, including pets that are secured on a leash. The entrance is located where the Acutts Drive crosses the Molweni River. Visitors can choose to walk upstream or downstream. The downstream walk also leads to the Long Shadows Trail in Krantzkloof Nature Reserve.
