Effective study habits for your children

Category Lifestyle

Exam season is upon us and it is considered a challenging time of year for both parents and kids. It's essential to support your kids in establishing good study habits from a young age since the pressure to achieve good results may be quite stressful for them. Healthy study habits will not only make it easier for your kids to handle their schoolwork, but they will also help them focus and absorb information.

To get you started on the path to a healthy test or exam time, let's look at some good study practices:

  • Create a designated study space at home

One of the most essential components of effective study habits is choosing the ideal place to study. Find a spot where your child can concentrate without being distracted by loud noises or others all the time. Provide school materials such as pencils, sharpeners, erasers, highlighters, and index cards in the study area. Distracting elements like the TV and portable gadgets like the iPad and phone should be removed.

  • Set a study timetable

Since their daily classes are all scheduled according to a timetable, your child should already be familiar with the idea of a time schedule. Therefore, the study timetable should also be ready before the test and exam dates approach. Design Cap or My Homework are great apps to help you create the perfect timetable.

How to create a study plan with your child:

  • Start by writing down the test/exam dates.
  • Identify how much time will be required for each subject.
  • Set aside time for every subject.
  • Establish the timetable.

If your child excels in science and only requires 4 hours to prepare for the test, divide the study time over two days, each with two 2-hour study sessions. By doing this, your child will be able to mark off finishing their first 2-hour session. As a result, they will feel progress and a sense of accomplishment, which will motivate them to finish what they have begun.

  • Set study targets and rewards

Help your child develop targets for each study session. These might be content- or time-based. For instance, your child may want to study for two hours, go through three chapters in the textbook, or do both.

It might occasionally be beneficial to motivate your child to study by offering a reward. Let your child choose the goal and select a fair incentive; if they succeed in reaching their objective, they will receive the reward they selected. This is an effective method to show children that perseverance pays off.

Even if they fall short of these objectives, never hesitate to cheer your child on. Some chapters could be trickier to comprehend than others. The most important thing is that they understand the information.

  • Give your child practice tests

Tests and practice exams are well-known for being effective learning and memory aids for kids. Being examined allows us to recover material from memory, which is an effective, scientifically supported method of hanging onto the information we learn. This will also show knowledge gaps and lessen exam anxiety for your child.

  • Encourage taking breaks

Some kids may become overly focused on their studies in an effort to succeed. It may be highly demanding, despite the fact that this is a wonderful thing. Make sure to include time for a break while your child is preparing their study routine.

They can also send messages to their buddies, play video games, watch some TV, or read a book at this time. In order to avoid being tense or stressed out from studying, it is crucial to give the brain some downtime.
